Elisa's Sharing

Elisa PostThe topic that I recently discussed in the Parents Support Groups session was “Communicating with children with learning disabilities”. During the session, few parents shared their fears, their uncertainties, and their helplessness towards their learning disabled child.

At that moment, this was déjà vu to me as this was exactly how I felt 8 years ago. Yet, what was different 8 years ago and now was that, I was alone to go through all the ups and downs to raise a child with learning disabilities back then. In fact, such harsh situations and experiences are hard to be understood or imagined by many other parents.

Although I fell and stumbled over much in the past eight years, I am grateful to the least that now my child is moving towards the right and effective way to creating a better future. In addition, I felt blessed because of the numerous supports I have received from experts in this particular area. I was also equipped with the knowledge of learning disabilities to guide me along the way of raising my child.

These supports and knowledge that I received have indeed made me and my child grow stronger, tougher, to learn not to give up, and to move forward. Back in 2009, the awareness on learning disabilities has yet to receive wider attention by the people in Malaysia. As a result, the lack of platform to provide parents with information on learning disabilities have resulted parents to learn through their own experiences, through exploration, and through trial and error. Based on this given situation, with the support of A Zon Educare Advisory, I have established the first Parents Support Group in hope to build a mutual support and provide information-sharing platform for these parents. Nevertheless, due to the parents' time limitation and geographical inconvenience, parents are unable to receive this benefit in a long term basis. However, with today’s Internet technology, parents will be able to gain support and information through internet. I hereby welcome parents who are interested and willing to share their successful experiences and methods about raising children with learning disabilities on this websites. Thereby, more parents will be able to gain more knowledge and insight about raising children with learning disabilities.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and gratefulness because I was given this precious child, who has let me learn, reflects, and grows in all areas. Therefore, together with the parents, I hope to create a better future for these children. So, let us work hand in hand supporting each other to make a difference in the lives of children who need a helping hand.
