Parenting Talk on Child Resiliency: Chinese Methodist Church, Merlimau, Melaka

Parenting Talk on Child ResiliencyThe founder of Azon and consulting psychologist, Ms. Lee Li Li has conducted Public Sharing Session at Chinese Methodist Church, Merlimau, Melaka on February 22, 2020 (Saturday) at 7:30pm.

Just like adults, young children have worries that cause stress. Adult may worry about job security or a fight with partner, while children may stress about their studies or exams. As parents to these children, how do we help our children to reduce stress and bounce back from difficulties, as well as guide them to learn their lessons along the journey?

Why affirmation is essential to child resiliency?

Parenting Talk on Child Resiliency Children often struggle with their academic studies, for example, “I don’t like this subject, it’s too hard!”, “I always don’t get it” or “I failed my exam, again”. These scenarios happen around us all the time. Nowadays, parents often provide direct assistance to help children overcome challenging situations. Otherwise, punishment are given to the children. When a child achieves good/poor grades, parents may verbally express your feelings toward the children’s hard works and efforts. Alternatively, parents may express their feelings through body language, such as comforting the child’s emotions with hugging or holding hands with eye contact, so that the child is aware of his or her own growth. Parents shall always remember that, our children’s constant growth is more important than their grades.

Building good parent-child relationship and effective communication with children

Parenting Talk on Child Resiliency Recently, anxiety and depression has becoming to be more common in young children due to various stress from different aspects. In fact, young children are more afraid of the expectations toward their exam performance instead of the examination itself. Children usually generate stress when they did not reach the expectations. Therefore, an effective communication between parent and children is essential to create emotional safety that allows for growth and healthy development in our children, as well as help our children to cultivate a positive attitude in dealing with stress and bounce back from difficulties.
