Hand in Hand, Together: CNY Visit to Rumah Victory Old Folks Home

PUCHONG: Life Educare Foundatio had organized the ‘Hand in Hand ─ Together’ visitation to Rumah Victory old folks home on 4th February 2018 (Sunday), from 7.30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at which the children helped the elderly to clean up the home and prepare a lovely lunch them.

Through this visitation, we aimed to enhance the children’s understanding towards the elderly people, and show solicitude for them. Meanwhile, the parents were enthusiastic. They had encouraged the participation of the children in this activity, as well as generously donated the necessaries to Rumah Victory.

Upon arrival, the elderly welcomed us with their warmhearted regards and bright smiles. After a brief explanation on the activity, the group teachers led the children to begin the morning hand exercise with the elderly. After the exercise, the children returned to their work, such as cleaning the rooms, putting up decorations and preparing the lunch.

On the occasion of the Chinese New Year, the group teachers and children worked together to clean up the home, and hoped to provide a comfortable environment for the elderly to spend their new year. Besides, the children learned the importance of cleanliness and made sure that every corner of the home was well-cleaned under the guidance of group teachers. On the other hand, some children were assigned to create a Chinese New Year atmosphere for the home by putting up the festive decorations. In addition, we also took this opportunity by letting the children to prepare a hearty vegetarian meal, and helped to feed the elderly who were unable to take care of themselves.

After lunch, the group teachers and children began the leg washing session with a heart truly filled with respect and gratitude for the elderly. Meanwhile, a series of performances were prepared for the elderly by the teachers and students, including lion dance, Chinese New Year songs and some classics. Next, the teachers and children had a simple cheerful dance with the elderly, distributed the mandarins and sent out blessings to them. With the vibrant ambience, the whole room was filled with laughter, jovial and warmth.

As the visitation was drawing to an end, the Life Educare Foundation representative addressed their thanks and good wishes to the elderly. Before the end of visitation, the group teachers led the children to say goodbyes and give a warm hug to the elderly, and made a perfect ending.

From this visitation to the old folk's home, the children had learned the concept of constructing a caring society, as well as cultivated their social responsibility and heart of gratitude. More importantly, the children learned to appreciate and care for the elderly.
